Privacy & your choices

Understand your
analytics choice.

Updated October 20, 2026

Modern Palaestra is a community and events website run by Ben Gibson in Seattle. You can browse the site and follow event links without enabling optional analytics.

Optional Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 only if you select “Allow analytics.” Until then, this site does not load Google’s analytics tag or send analytics requests to Google. Choosing “No thanks” keeps it off.

When enabled, Google normally uses first-party _ga cookies to distinguish a browser with a pseudonymous identifier. We configure these cookies to expire after 60 days rather than renewing their lifetime with each visit. Google also receives browser/device and session information, page activity, approximate location and the button events described below. This is not anonymous data: your browser can be recognized across visits while the cookie remains.

Because this website describes an adult queer community and its events, page and button activity may reveal interest in that community. Please consider that before opting in.

What we measure

  • Visits to a fixed list of this website’s pages, using generic labels and reporting paths such as /events/ and /club/, with no URL query strings or fragments.
  • Clicks on ticket buttons, with a fixed event key, in-person or online choice, button label and location on the page.
  • Clicks to explore membership, discuss membership, sponsorship, hosting or partnership, and follow our social links.
  • After consent, a broad traffic-source category (social, search or unknown) and a fixed campaign label: none, instagram_bio, facebook_bio, x_bio, youtube_profile, google_search or bing_search.

Our code does not send names, email addresses, form contents, private membership details, User-ID, arbitrary link URLs, full referring URLs or raw URL query strings or fragments to Analytics. We do not enable Google Signals, advertising personalization, advertising audiences, enhanced conversions, session replay, Meta pixels or X pixels. A ticket click tells us someone followed a link; it does not establish that they registered or paid on Luma.

After consent, our code uses the referring host and a single allowlisted campaign tag to derive those coarse labels. It does not send or store raw referring URLs or query strings. Fixed campaign labels are declared signals, not proof of origin. Unknown includes absent, blocked and unrecognized sources; it does not identify direct visits.

For navigation within this website, we store only the source category, campaign label and an arrival timestamp in this tab’s session storage. The record is valid for at most 30 minutes from that arrival; an expired record is cleared the next time our code checks it. There is no identifier in this record. Internal navigation does not extend its lifetime. We clear it when analytics is declined or withdrawn, and when an arrival has no recognized source.

A measured page view or ticket-button click also creates one companion event with a fixed source or campaign label in its name so aggregate reports can show those categories. These extra event totals do not represent additional visitors or purchases. Page views are not sessions; ticket clicks are not registrations or sales.

Change or withdraw your choice

This update requires a fresh analytics choice before expanded source and campaign reporting starts. An older analytics grant does not enable it.

Use “Analytics choices” in the footer of any page to allow or decline analytics. We remember that choice in your browser’s local storage on this website. If you clear browser storage or use a different browser or hostname, you may be asked again.

If you turn analytics off, our code stops future measurement, removes the Google tag and deletes this website’s accessible _ga cookies. The page reloads without loading Analytics. Withdrawal does not erase information already sent to Google. Browser settings and Google’s Analytics opt-out tool provide additional controls.

Who receives the data

If you opt in, the tag is fetched from www.googletagmanager.com and measurements are sent to Google Analytics services, including www.google-analytics.com and regional Google Analytics endpoints. Google processes this information to provide Analytics reporting to us. Processing may occur outside your country. Read Google’s Privacy Policy and how Google uses information from sites that use its services for details.

Hosting, forms and external links

Our hosting service receives the connection information needed to deliver the website, such as an IP address and requested page. That operational processing is separate from optional Analytics. If you choose to join our event email list, we save your email address, the date and wording of your consent, a consent version and the signup source in our private Cloudflare D1 database through our existing Sites backend at benbts.com. We use these details for future Modern Palaestra event updates. Signup requires your explicit consent and works independently of optional Analytics. It does not subscribe you to the Healing at a Bathhouse book list or send an automated email campaign. To withdraw your permission or request removal, email hello@benbts.com. Short-lived abuse counters use rotating hashed network identifiers rather than stored raw IP addresses.

Tickets, conversations and social profiles open on external services such as Luma, Calendly, YouTube and X. Their own privacy policies apply when you visit them. Declining our analytics does not prevent you from following those links.
